What happens to music culture when the spaces that support it start to disappear? Across Sweden, doors to rehearsal rooms are closing and public funding is shrinking, just as more young people are starting bands and searching for places to create music together. For many young musicians, access to affordable rehearsal space is becoming increasingly limited, creating a cultural bottleneck.    As rehearsal spaces vanish, vital entry points for emerging artists disappear with them. This shift has been impossible to ignore for Fryshuset(opens in a new window), Sweden’s largest non-profit youth organisation. Through Fryshuset Music, they work directly with young people across the country, using music as a tool for creativity, confidence and community. Each week, up to 300 young people rehearse, record, and learn with Fryshuset Music, while thousands more take part through events and initiatives over the year. Among these are Fryshuset Music’s event ‘Open Stage’, giving young artists the chance to perform on a professional stage at the venue Klubben, and the Skate Punk Ramp Jam, which brings together skateboarding competitions and live music from Fryshuset bands. The creativity doesn’t stop there. Those who use the space have also created a youth-led project called Radarn, a digital live stage where emerging artists perform and share their stories through live sessions and interviews.

“Marshall has created a sense of safety, not only for me... but also for the younger ones, who are given a place to explore a possible passion”

– MIKAELA, ARTIST AND MENTOR AT MARSHALL REHEARSAL SPACE

Our commitment at Marshall is to ensure music is accessible to everyone and not determined by background, resources or circumstance. That shared belief is what led to our partnership, and together we support the Marshall Rehearsal Space at Fryshuset. With our backing, the space can continue to offer free access for young musicians, regardless of experience level. This provides young people the opportunity to discover, create, and express themselves without barriers, all within a community that nurtures their talent and potential.

The space is a professionally equipped rehearsal studio open to young people aged 13 to 25, but its value goes far beyond just access to gear. It offers a structured, supportive setting where bands rehearse, ideas take shape, and confidence builds. For some, that means stepping into music-making for the first time, and for others, refining their skills needed for live performance and recording, all in a space designed to inspire. Central to this environment are experienced mentors who are on hand to guide young musicians both technically and creatively as they develop their craft and find their voice.

The true impact is found in the stories and experiences of the young people who fill these rooms with music. In this supportive environment, musicians discover newfound confidence and the simple joy of creating together. “When the Marshall room opened, I barely dared to stand in front of a mic. Now I sing for people I’ve never played with before,” one young musician shares. Another reflects on the excitement of discovery: “I didn’t know music could be this much fun.”

“I’ve learned so incredibly much. It’s a whole new chance to learn sound engineering and support the development of young musicians”

Experiences like these are made possible through our partnership, which ensures that young people at Fryshuset are not only developing their musical craft but also gaining leadership experience and practical career pathways into the music industry. By helping provide the funding Fryshuset Music needs, we ensure these musicians have opportunities to shape projects, influence programming, and bring their ideas to life, developing skills that reach well beyond the studio walls.

At a time when cultural infrastructure is shrinking, partnerships like this are about more than offering a place for musicians to play. The Marshall Rehearsal Space stands as a vital pathway into the music industry, ensuring the next generation still has somewhere to begin and the support to go further.
